Residents Take Control at the Clean Streets Project in Brentwood, Central Islip and Bay Shore

Video Journalist Josh Wein

Over 400 residents volunteered to take back their streets by cleaning the streets in Brentwood, Central Islip and North Bay Shore.

While to many, a community clean up may seem like a day of simple community service. The truth is that such events, especially when it is done at this scale, have great meaning.

Clean comminities let outsiders know that the residents care about their neighborhood. Studies show that people are less likely to litter a clean street. Most importantly, the outpuring of support  strengthens neighborly bonds and instills hometown pride among the residents.

The Clean Streets Committee set a goal of collecting 5 tons of garbage and they exceed their target with a 5.77 ton haul.
